Alaska is freezing my face off

I'm giving myself the award of Worst Blogger Ever. Really. (Thank you, thank you, you're far too kind!)

Sorry about the non-existence lack of blogging. Alaska is...well, cold. And dark.

And I actually don't mind one bit.

That's a lie. Occasionally I mind. But only when we have 80mph wind gusts blowing snow drifts in my way, making the usual 15 degrees feel like -10. THAT'S when I mind. But for the most part I've really enjoyed running here. What little I've done of running, that is. But, really, running in Alaska is pretty great. There's something pretty invigorating about running in the snow in the dark with my now ever-present headlamp to light the way. The snow glistens and sparkles, and I LOVE hearing the crunch of the ice and snow underneath my feet as I make my way along my route.

Sure, it's cold. But I've upgraded from warm-weather running gear (basically nothing), to bundling in layers upon layers. Layers, people. You can never have enough. Especially layers on your ass. Seriously. Does anyone else have this problem?! I like to wear a pair of shorts over my Under Armor Cold Gear running tights. And even with that extra layer of clothing, my ass cheeks are still frozen solid by the end of the run. But the rest of me? Just fine. Just fine, indeed. Oh -- and my YakTrax! I don't run without them!

For all of you cold weather runners, what's your must have for winter running? What can't you live without?

  1. I must have my gloves. When it gets below 50 degrees I wear my regular running gloves, but when it is below 15 degrees I wear mittens that my wife bought me, they are gloves with an over mitten you can use when it is really cold and they work fine. Of course I wear a hat and layers :)

  3. Glad you're able to enjoy running in Alaska! My ass is the one thing that always stays cold the longest - seems hard to warm back up!

  4. I just ordered the mid-zero running tights from Sugoi and they are awesome. I also always always always wear a toque because you lose so much heat through your head!

  5. Christy! My butt is ALWAYS freezing when I run in the cold. Why? I don't understand! It's naturally insulated, yet is always frozen!

  6. There is so much that I can't live without in the cold but what I love is my turtle fur around my neck. I can't stand a cold neck!
