I realize today is not Sunday. I also realize that I haven't posted in over 2 weeks. Just put a big, fat, red FAIL stamp on my forehead for Sunday blogging. Better late than never, right? I have a lot of random things on my mind right now -- running and non-running alike.
First of all, I want to congratulate one of my fave blog buddies, Muddy Runner, for his fantastic first marathon a couple of Sundays ago! LB ran the Surf City Marathon with a time of 4:42. LB is an inspiration to me. Three years ago he weighed 308 pounds...and now he just completed a marathon, weighing in at around 190! Amazing. If you haven't stopped by his blog yet, do so now. I'll wait... There's nothing better than a virgin-marathoner race report!
As you might have already guessed from the title of my post, I have suffered my first running injury. And it's a tricky one. I'd never heard of it before two weeks ago...when the husband diagnosed me. Let me tell you my story:
A couple of weeks ago I stood up at my desk at work and felt a sharp pain on the outside of my left hip/thigh, sorta close to my butt. I figured it was nothing, the pain subsided, and then later that day I went to the gym for running and lifting. As soon as I hopped on the treadmill the pain came back. It wasn't as sharp as before, but it was pretty bothersome. I ran through it, thinking if I ran a little bit it would work out the kinks. The pain lessened to a dull ache and I ran for 4 miles. The pain wasn't anything like I'd never run through before. It just felt like, well, pain you get sometimes because you run. Make sense?
So after I finished running my scheduled 4 miles I hopped off the treadmill and, whoa! I couldn't walk without limping. That's never happened before. Not even after the marathon. So I went home and promptly asked the husband to check me out. No, not "check me out", you pervs (although he is allowed to do that!), check me out, as in use his physical therapy skills and find out what's wrong.
Side note: Have I ever mentioned how much it turns me on when he gets all professional, and talks "physical therapy" to me? Because it does. He's learned so much, I love it. He is going to be an effing great PT when all the school is said and done.
So, the husband had me do some stretches, then he would bend and twist my hip/leg this way, or that way, and ask me if it hurt or not. Then he did this one stretch/move...I don't what you call it in PT terms...he had me lay on my back, bend my right leg so that my knee was elevated with my right foot on the ground, and had me prop my left ankle on my right knee. Then he pushed down on my left knee and....FML!!! OWWWW.
Me: "That hurts!!"
Husband: "I know exactly what it is."
Me: "Please tell me it's not a stress fracture..."
Husband: "You'd need an x-ray for me to tell you that."
Me: "Eff my life!"
Husband: "It's your piriformis."
Me: "Piri...what?"
Husband: "Your piriformis muscle. It's probably too tight, and it's probably pinching your sciatic nerve. That's where the pain comes from."
Me: "How do I fix it?"
Husband: "Rest."
Me: "I hate resting."
Husband: "You should probably do some strength exercises on your hip abductors, too."
Me: (In my head) "Eff my life."
So, the husband went online to one of his scholarly websites, did some research, and came up with the following:
* Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or otherwise irritated by the piriformis muscle causing pain, tingling and numbness in the butt and along the path of the sciatic nerve descending down the lower thigh and into the leg. <--- This is totally where my pain is at.

* Runners are very susceptible to piriformis syndrome because of the constant forward motion. It can be avoided if the runner does lateral stretching and strengthening exercises. <---I run. I hate strength, and I (oops) never stretch. FML! Lesson learned the hard way.
*Repeated forward motion, with no lateral (side to side) movement leads to disproportionate weak hip abductors, and tight hip adductors. This causes the piriformis muscle to shorten and severely contract, which pinches the sciatic nerve. <---This is totally me. The husband tells me I have the weakest hip abductors he's ever seen.
* Piriformis syndrome is also caused by overpronation of the foot. <--- FML! I'm a "severe" overpronator with the flattest feet possible. Boo.
So there you have it. I took my husband's advice and rested...for 2 days. What can I say? I really wanted to run. Stupid, stupid Christy. It didn't improve. Still hurt. I've been doing increased stretching and strengthening exercises that the husband told me to do, and I finally gave in and didn't run. Last Monday I went to my yoga class, did some awesome stretching, and there was no more pain anymore. So I decided to test out another run last Tuesday. It felt great for the first 4 miles. Then the pain came back. Stupid Christy prevailed and decided to keep running for 5 more miles. It was just a dull pain, but it was still there. After the 9-miler, I went home frustrated. I've finally come to the realization that rest doesn't mean "only a couple of days." I'm going to continue to do my stretching and strengthening to make my weak areas stronger, and I've been taking a rest from running. My last run was over a week ago. I'll play it by ear. I'm going to try a short run this weekend, test it out, see how I feel. The husband said two weeks off from running should be okay. I'll still go to the gym and do other forms of cardio, but I guess I need to heal.
This is part of the reason I haven't blogged. It's depressing, not being able to run. When I go to the gym and see everyone on the treadmills I get this sense of...longing. It sounds so cheesy, but it's true. I hate not being able to step on that treadmill, or step on the asphalt and get going. Running is what I do, and what am I supposed to do if I can't run? I know, I should stop whining. I'll be able to run soon, and there are lots of runners out there with worse injuries than mine. I should be grateful it's not something worse.
*sigh* I hate not running.
Moving on.
In some good news for blogging, I may rescind my "blog on sunday only" policy. Good news for y'all, bad news for me. Just last week I was informed that the clinic that I work for in the hospital is being shut down. Which means starting yesterday, I no longer have a full-time job. I'm being placed as a PRN (as needed) employee, so who knows how many hours I'll get during any given week. If y'all remember my post awhile back about my job situation since moving to Florida, it hasn't been a good one. Go back and re-read if you want the full story.
So anyway, while this puts financial strain on my little family of two, I'm trying to see this as a blessing in disguise. I now have loads of time to study for my English tests, which is good. I've been feeling so time-crunched for studying, and I've been freaking out that I won't be prepared for the exams. Plus, it means I can give myself an hour every day to blog. Yay!
And now for the best part of this post, and probably the only reason you kept reading through this novel of a post -- a giveaway! A totally real and awesome giveaway. Not a fake giveaway, a REAL one. Hooray.
First, let me give a little background info.
I have earphone/earbud issues. Ever since I started running with my iPod I've had problems with earbuds staying in my ear. I've tried all kinds, all brands. Skull Candy, Bose, apple, Sony, etc. You name it, I've tried them. Apparently my ear holes are teeny tiny. (ear holes....hahahaha, sounds funny) Everything is too big, and I'm constantly having to jam those things back in my ears during my runs. Annoying.
A while back I given the chance to try out a pair of yurbuds. These things are amazing. Freaking amazing. They are custom-fit to your ear, and while they look a little funny, they are so comfortable. The best part? They haven't fallen out of my ears. Not once. *yayyyyyyy!* Oh, and just in case you're wondering, they fit over most brands of earbuds. So you don't have to buy new earphones for these babies to work.

But that's not the only thing I love about these things. The sound quality is fan-freaking-tastic. I don't have to turn my iPod's volume up as loud as normal, and it seriously sounds like I've got a home theater surround sound system in my ears. No joke, folks! Here's mine:

So, the folks over at Yurtopia have kindly offered to give 10 of my readers a pair of Yurbuds, too! Not just one pair, but TEN pairs!!!! So here are the rules for this giveaway.
1. Become a follower of my blog, and get one entry. Let me know you did this in a comment. If you're already a follower, let me know that, too.
2. Post a link to this giveaway on your blog, and get TWO entries. Let me know you did this in a comment.
3. Post a link to the Yurbuds website, and get one entry. Let me know you did this.
4. In a comment, tell me what kind of earbuds/earphones you have. Do you like them/hate them? Tell me why. Get one more entry.
All of this can be done in one comment. I don't need 4 different comments for the same person. Unless you really want to do that, of course, but one comment is just fine. Contest ends Saturday, Feb. 20 at midnight EST.
Please note that I received my yurbuds free of charge from Yurtopia, and this review is given honestly and of my own free will. If I hated them, I'd tell ya, I promise!
Oh, and if you like this giveaway, I'm pretty sure you'll love this one. Adam, over at I am Boring, is hosting his first ever blog giveaway. Go check it out and enter to win!
Hi Christy,
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! I am sorry about your injury but your husband sounds like a smart cookie and a good guy to have around!! Hopefully everything will be fine and you won't have to eff your life:) Hang in there!!
I am already a follower:)
I am posting your blog give away on my sight:)
ReplyDeleteI am posting the Yurbuds web sight on my blog:)
ReplyDeleteI don't currently run with anything...so that means I need something for listening to music in the future!! So those really cool yurbuds would be perfect:)
ReplyDeleteI am already one of your followers. I currently use the apple iPod headphones and I'm with you..they constantly fall out. Hope I win so I can check out the Yurbuds!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your injury. I just got over a knee injury due to tight quad muscles. You are VERY lucky that your husband is a PT. I dropped a small fortune to fix my leg. I never stretched prior to injury, not I religiously stretch and foam roll. The foam roller basically saved me season!
ReplyDeleteSorry you're injured. Boo. I was wondering why I hadn't seen a post for a while. Hoping you have a quick recovery. Don't push it..you're body will let you know when.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'd like to enter your giveaway! They sound pretty cool! I am already a follower. Thanks!
Piriformis problems is what I have had and am rather vigilant about not getting again. Although I am on the edge now. It happens as I increase mileage. I have stretches I am (usually) good about doing that make a ton of diff. I'm sure your husband can help you. I went forever without running a few years ago after visiting a PT and two chiropractors. I couldn't drive any distance comfortably or do much sitting for a bit. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower for your giveaway.
I am posting it on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI use the earphones that came with the Ipod. Mildly satisfied.
ReplyDeleteHey Christy, welcome back. First, I hope you feel better and are able to get out there and run pretty soon. Thanks for the shout-out and all your support. Thinking about your Disney World Marathon experience gave me a jolt ahead of my own race, that's certain.
ReplyDeleteThis giveaway is great! I am already a follower (one entry) and I'll get back to you when I post the links on my site. Also, I alternate between the headphones my BlackBerry came with and some Target-brand ones I bought at... a store, which you'll never guess the name of. The BlackBerry ones are cool except they have some plastic covers and one already popped off, so I can't really use them anymore. The generic ones are okay, they wrap around my ear and stay in for the most part. Still, I'm in search for the perfect earpiece so maybe this is it. If you say they haven't fallen out of your ear yet, then it sounds like this could be the one. This might actually help revive the BlackBerry ones, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed (another entry).
I've missed you in bloggy land. You poor thing....I too have the weakest hips known to man. I hurt my Piriformis a few months ago and had to the REST thing. I took time off and then tried to early and hurt it again. It is now OK but my right butt cheek and hammy seem to be sensitive. Not so fun. So rest my friend....running will always be there.
ReplyDeletealso love the buds...I'll be back tomorrow to try to win those babies.
I am already a follower.
ReplyDeleteI linked this on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI posted the Yurbuds link on my blog :)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I didn't see the part about one comment for everything. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI have two sets of earphones.
iPod ear buds that I gave to my son because they constantly fall out. I have tiny ear holes too lol.
I also have Panasonic ear phones that wrap around the back of my neck and over the top of my ears. I've had them for years but afer a while they make the tops of my ears sore.
I really want the Yurbuds so pick me please :)
Sorry to hear about the injury, I had this a few years ago and after some research on the internet I self diagnosed it and found a stretch to help recovery while I stopped running for a while. It looks like you are in good hands so I won't go into detail on my recovery only to say that I still do my stretches for this every other day as maintenance and I have not had a reoccurance since then. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteHi! I found your blog through Lisa (Lisa Runs, Wait...What?) and am now officially a stalker, err, follower! I will continue to be a loyal follower, especially since I realized we have some things in common: we're runners (duh!), we're both injured, we both need to stretch more, and we're both great blog writers. OK, so my opinion is biased on my 3rd point. I will post a link to your blog on my blog, provided I can remember how to do that. Normally I attempt this for 10 minutes, FAIL, and then just tell people to copy and paste the link off my blog. I have big ears, that I can wiggle (weird talent, I know. It didn't get me on the Letterman Show, but that's another story), so I have the ear things that hang over my elephant ears (I'm exaggerating). I used to have "buds," but they would always fall out of my sweaty ears. TMI, huh?! If I win yurbuds giveaway, I'll giveaway them to Lisa, unless she wins also, then I'll give them to a blogging buddy of yours who didn't win. See, I'm not here for the prize, I'm here to be supportive and nurturing during your time of need. Oh, and if by some chance you just happen to post a comment on my blog (Hint-hint), that would be great also. OK, I'm done. Happy exercising and stretching.
ReplyDeleteWAIT! On second thought, if I win, I'm keeping the yurbuds. Sorry losers!
ReplyDeleteHow lucky are you to have your own personal PT? I am totally hating on you right now. :-) I have had sciatic problems recently, so I wonder if I might have a similar problem...I'll have to add some more stretching and abductor work to my routine just to cover my bases.
ReplyDeleteI currently have a pair of Sony earbuds that I hate, but I have not found a set that I like either.I am a follower, and I've linked you on my blog.
I am a follower.
ReplyDeleteI will link to this and website on my blog.
I use nike over the head headphones because my ears are wayyyyy small! I am so happy to hear someone else has this problem! At my last marathon, Target was charging way too much for the Nikes...(I know, TARGET, really?!), so I bought some Sonys and I hate them!
I'm a new follower! I found your blog thru Lisa's link about your giveaway! I'm so sorry you are injured. I had to deal with post tibial tendonitis last year and not running really sucked! Hope you get better soon.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I also posted your giveaway on my blog and included a link to the yurbuds.com website!
ReplyDeleteI currently just use the pair of headphones that came with my iPod and just this morning those babies were popping out of my ear. So annoying! LOL
I am already a follower (mainly in stalker mode). I have linked your giveaway on my blog and linked to the yurbuds website.
ReplyDeleteI run with a set of Sony running ear buds. They wrap around the back of the ear and do a good job of staying in place. The only problem is that they are a couple of years old and need to be replaced.
Hate to hear about your injury. Hopefully you will be back up and running soon.
Oh noes! I'm sorry you are laid up on the injured list girly! That is no bueno!!!
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side: See you this weekend! YAY! :)
I love your blog posts. I also love your "eff my life" comments. Cracks me up.
ReplyDeleteI'll get all four entries. I already follow you, I will have a link to this post up on my blog within a 1/2 hour, and it will include a link to the Yurbuds website. Also, I just run with the earbuds that came with my iPod. I've never really had a problem with them. I have Skull Candy ones too, but I'm too scared to run with them because they block out all of the noise of cars and such and it freaks me out when I run on the road (which I ALWAYS do, because I hate treadmills). The End.
P.S. Hope you heal fast. No more injuries, so that we can run together in January!
I am already a follower!
ReplyDeleteMy earbuds are the ones that came with my ipod nano..I was jsut thinking today about how they are "not cutting it" anymore! I would love to win some!
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel not being able to run..I get frustrated when I hear about my friends' long runs, or see my Runner's World staring me in the face! I am recovering from a hip flexor injury and I did the same thing...I started to think it was getting better, so I tried to go back to some of my activities, and it hurt all over again! I'm not sure that I made it worse, but i have definitely prolonged the healing process! I am going to my doc this Friday to see if he will give me a script for steriods and PT. I usually HATE steriod use (z-pack) but I don't want to cause scar tissue that eventually leads to arthritis, because I keep damaging the area! I bet I could give you a run for your money on the "weakest abductor" muscles, mine are SO weak! Keep us posted on how it's going!! It's annoying to rest, but believe me, the alternative of making it worse and prolonging the pain is NOT worth it!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower - and I actually use these (they are getting pretty old so I can use another pair) LOVE THEM! Please get me in the drawing!
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower and heard about your blog from Jamie over at http://sweatyhugs.blogspot.com/. Sorry to hear about your injury, but great that your husband has some knowledge on the injury. I can relate to wanting to run or workout but not being able to. Resting is no joke! We all need it :)
ReplyDeleteI posted your giveaway on my blog. Thanks for the opportunity!
Booo, that sucks about the butt-muscle injury AND that honestly sucks a bit more about the job. Use the time to double down on your eventual (teaching) path.
ReplyDeleteEnter me into the contest! I follow! :) My good sony headphones crapped out on me, so I use the crappy iPod ones that don't fit into my ears AT ALL. These would be a big win.
Alright, stuff posted about your blog giveaway on my blog. Thanks again for the giveaway and I'm crossing my fingers so I can win!
ReplyDelete1. I'm a follower
ReplyDelete2. I use the plain applie ear phones. They are okay, except they slip out of my ear when I sweat and the don't stay in well at all when I wear my earwarmer headband. So I'd love to try yurbuds!
Sorry about the injury. I've had a year of injuries and I know...NOT RUNNING SUCKS!!!
ReplyDelete1. I'm a new follower!
2. Posted a link on my blog for your giveaway.
3. Posted the yurbuds link on my blog
4. I just bought a new pair of Nike earbuds because the sound in one ear of my old ones died about 2 weeks ago. I picked them because they have this little thing that you can wind the cord around (I'm notorious for getting tangled up in too long cords) and that clips to your shirt/shorts/whatever. Guess what? I like the clip thing...but they fall out. GAH!
Pick me? Please?
Yay for giveaways, boo for injuries. I hope you feel better soon. I have been hurting in the same spot, I might need to try some new stretches too.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm already a follower.
I'll post a link for your giveaway on my blog. Cheers!
I just want to say I've totally been there. I hurt my left knee senior year of college. I had the same experience you did with a much more intense pain AFTER a run than prior to it.
ReplyDeleteIt was depressing and I cried about it a few times. On a day that I was being dramatic I told my dad I felt like I would never run again. But then a couple things happened. I realized how much I enjoyed some other forms of exercise I typically passed on to run (For the record swimming is NOT one of them. haha.) And when I was able to start running again...I think my love for the sport got even stronger.
I went from my longest run being a 10k.. to stopping running b/c I was hurt...to a 5k to prove I was back (Holla!)...to training for a half marathon.
I'd say stretch like you've never stretched before. And listen to your body. My friend whose done a marathon told me "I'm a big fan of stopping when it hurts." I received this piece of advice when I was getting back into running after the injury and it's something that I've really taken to heart. If you can do 4 miles pain free... DON'T push it. Even if your endurance goes down a little, it shouldn't take long for your body to remember what longer runs are like once you are all the way better!
Hope the return back to running goes well - be sure to take it easy on that injury! (If you're not hobbling around, it's sure to be more fun at the Donna race this weekend!)
ReplyDeleteInjuries suck. I'm tired of dealing with them. At least you have a built-in PT at home!
ReplyDeleteFor the contest, I'm already a follower.
Oh, and I currently use Shure EC-2 earbuds. They sound awesome, but they suck for running. The work better as an earplug than my OSHA-approved airline earplugs, which means that if I put them both in, I can't hear anything around me - great for relaxing, terrible for running.
ReplyDelete1 - I follow!
ReplyDelete2 - I've linked to you!
3 - I've linked to Yurbuds!
4 - I use the Sennheiser sport ones that have an extra little knob that fits into the upper curve of your ear. They've worked great, but I'd love to compare the sound quality of those to the Yurbuds that pipe the sound more directly into your ear canal.
I just followed ya! Sorry about the injury - rest up and feel better.
ReplyDeleteThose look awesome! I have a problem with buds popping out but these look like they just might work for me! Thanks for the chance to win. I follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteI have over-the ear buds, so they stick in your ear but they also have the little C-shape that helps keep them in. It's annoying though because I have glasses and I have to arrange the plastic bits under my glasses and if the earphone slips, my glasses do and then the ground starts to move!! And sometimes I fall off the treadmill!
ReplyDeletehey christy!
ReplyDeleteSo excited for this give-away. i posted your blog and the yurbud site as well ..and i have been following you for a bit ... :)
sorry about the injury ..hopefully with the smarty pants husband of yours you will be back on track in no time .. . :) thanks for the give-away ... . i just started running and would love a pair ..currently using skullcandy ..and they are ok . .but def. not doing the trick!
lysh
I bloigged about the giveaway for more entries!
