'Tis the season

It seems everywhere I look on the blogosphere someone has fallen sick. I suppose it is that time of year.

In good news, I feel better today than I did yesterday. It's a start, I guess, but today will be Day 4 with no running or exercise. Boo. Depending on how I feel tonight, I'm going to attempt my 10-miler tomorrow. If I don't make it the full 10 miles, I at least will have a good excuse.

The other day I was talking with one of the nurse practitioners that I work with at the hospital and she noticed that I was reading Runner's World. Which, of course, led to the subject of running, how far I run, how many miles is a marathon (don't people just know that?), yadda yadda yadda...she then proceeded to ask me, "Doesn't running that far screw up your knees and bang up your kidneys?" to which I replied, "do I look all banged up to you?" I don't think she appreciated my answer.

But, seriously. How is it that someone who works in health care be so oblivious? Why is it that non-runners think that running is bad for you? "Yes, ma'am. Exercise is bad for you." Please.

  1. You wanna know how many runners I have had with a total knee replacement? NONE. Ive had hundreds of total knees that are obese, have high blood pressure, and are diabetic! Especially a nurse who sees the sickest people...wouldnt you think that would motivate them to NOT end up like that? Funny world we live in.

  2. I got this all the time at my old job. A lot of "Why would you run if you're not being chased?" Well...

  4. That made my list of things I hate. My roommate always looks scared when he hears someone say it to me. Like he knows I am about to go off. LOL!

Thanks for the Ragnar tips! I am runner 9 so I will see you out there!!!

  5. I lost a crapload of weight, like 120 pounds, over 20 months in 2006-07 so all my family and everyone is supportive of my running. But I do have one friend who can't understand why I run.

He asked me "When you're out there running, what are you running from?" which got some laughs. I responded "I'm running from those 120 pounds that I lost" and that shut him up.

  6. People are crazy... and you make me laugh. Although, I've never felt this bad after a race before, so maybe running is hurting me. Or maybe I'm just an idoit that didn't stretch afterwards. I think I've learned my lesson.

  7. Eh... yeah.. well I have heard of people who were otherwise healthy injuring themselves while training for a marathon. But I don't think this is what she was referring to. Shee sounds more like one of those doubters who is like "Running is bad for you. Period."

Which I never understand because the people who say this a lot of times are out of shape. Great comments on this post ;)
