Before I run a Ragnar Relay I like to get at least one night run under my belt just to remember how it feels to run with a headlamp and vest. For me it's more of a mental preparation thing than anything else.
So I ran at night last night.
And I was immediately reminded why I love the night runs during the relay. Nothing gets your adrenaline going like the night run. It can be a tad scary, running in the dark with nothing to guide you but the tiny lamp strapped to your head. It only illuminates the way a few feet in front of you. Sometimes you stumble on a small rock or two, sometimes you run into a dead bush that found it's way into the middle of your path, sometimes you lose your stride when your foot hits a small pothole. Shit happens.
But the best part of the night run? Looking up and seeing a black sky spotted with thousands of stars. Turning off your music and just listening to the sound of your own breathing. And during a relay, catching a glimpse of that blinking red LED light a quarter of a mile ahead, then thinking to yourself, "I'm gonna pass that runner. Watch me."
I'm SO excited for the Ragnar this weekend!
Is it weird that this post just gave me chills?!!? I can distinctly remember both night runs I have done in Ragnar's and you're so right, it's an experience altogether different from any other run you'll ever do. Good luck this weekend chica!!!
