Eaten alive

So much for my Music Mondays, yeah? I tried, but I guess it's not really me.

So, this really has nothing to do with running, but I'd thought I'd share anyway. Yesterday the husband and I decided to go on a little hike after church. Since we're both used to hiking up mountains, it was a bit of a change for us. Well, mostly for me. Walking through flat swamps doesn't really seem like "hiking". It was pretty, though.

We went to a little place called Rice Creek Conservation Swamp near Palatka, FL. It's about 30 minutes away from where we live. It was a scorcher -- 90+, yikes! -- and I still seem to forget that 90 in Florida literally means 100 in Utah. Damn humidity.

And because I didn't factor in the humidity, I also didn't factor in mosquitoes. Lots of them. Eating away at my skin. If they were humans, my flesh would've been a nice piece of juicy steak.

I didn't bring bug spray, and was subsequently swatting away those little beasts the entire hike. I'm officially covered in red bites, including two on my ear. My ear! Who gets mosquito bites on their ears?! Apparently I do.

This is just another testament as to how clueless I am about living near a beach in hot and humid weather. See, in Utah the mosquitoes haven't even hatched yet. They probably won't hatch for a couple of months. I wish Mother Nature had a learning curve.

Enjoy the pics. Although the hike wasn't strenuous, it was beautiful and different than anything I've ever hiked through before.
Next time I think I'll try bringing a backpack, instead of shoving all my water into my purse...

Mosquito Haven

Apparentely I'm no good at holding the camera still, but that is the back of my lovely husband's head

The flailing arm is me just swattign away at a mosquito that just buzzed into my ear.

  1. You are funny... the mosquitoes are out in Utah. At least in some parts of the valley. I saw them buzzing around in West Valley on Sunday night and quickly went inside. But I must come and check out these swamps!

  2. I agree that "hiking" to me means that there is an uphill, some sort of destination, and a downhill. Kansas, Texas, Florida...in these places you don't hike, you just walk around outside.

  3. Yeah Utah doesn't compare to Nebraska. I can't imagine how much it differs from Florida!

  4. On the positive side of things, at least you don't live in Alabama. I've never experienced more humidity than in Bayou Le Batre, AL. Virginia can be pretty bad... but nothing like there. I was there in OCTOBER 2006.
