As I gear up for the Disney World Marathon (27 days!) I've been thinking that I need to get a couple of things in order.
First of all, my iPod is in serious need of some new tunage. Some of the songs that I currently have rotating on my running playlist have been on there for over two years. iTunes reported a few of those songs being played well over the 100-count range. Oh dear.
No wonder I'm bored these days at the gym. My tunes need a makeover. So I'm coming to you, fellow runners, for input. What songs should I download? I'll need enough for approximately 4 1/2 hours. Sure, I've got plenty of songs that I'll keep on the playlist for the next few months, but they won't last a marathon.
I listen to almost anything. I've got 80s, 90s, pop, rock, punk, country, rap, etc. As long as it's uptempo, I'll put it on there. Okay, I take that back. I only have ONE country song on my entire playlist, but it doesn't mean I won't take country suggestions. But let's err on the side of country pop, yeah?
Some tunes I've been enjoying lately:
For Your Entertainment - Adam Lambert
My Life Would Suck Without You - Glee cast
Resistance - Muse
Uprising - Muse
I Belong To You - Muse
My Oh My - The Wreckers
You Are the One - Shiny Toy Guns
I'm Shakin' - Rooney
Kings and Queens - 30 Seconds to Mars
Funhouse - P!nk
Bad Romance - Lady GaGa
Secondly, I want to take my phone with me during the marathon. To take pictures (Disney characters will be there in full force!), and to call friends and family if I need encouragement. I've noticed that a lot of you take your phones with you during your runs, but where do you put them? Is there some sort of arm band attachment that you can buy? Or do you just hold them? I could always try to put them in the place where my GUs go, but then where would I put my GUs? I'm clueless. Help.
Third, what else am I forgetting? Any suggestions for race day preparations?
*UPDATE: I added my current iPod running soundtrack on the right-hand side.
I would suggest a spibelt to hold your phone, GUs, keys, etc. www.spibelt.com They are awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteAs for your playlist, how about some Black Eyed Peas?
I have the same sort of dilemma. I want to take my phone so I can text my wife to let her know where I'll be instead of having her stand around at different mile markers for hours waiting for me. I do have a fuel belt with a pocket but it's big enough for my phone and nothing else. And I'd rather not have my Gu in my pockets but I suppose that's what it'll come down to.
ReplyDeleteAs far as music, well, my musical taste might be a bit harder than yours but I love running to Metallica, Rammstein, Nirvana, Rage and a few other assorted heavy songs.
But I also like The Killers, The Raconteurs and some assorted crappy 80s songs (I need to get me a Wham CD!). I also really like running to Johnny Cash, and I'm definitely not into country. For my half marathon, the middle third or so of the playlist was Johnny Cash and the last third was Metallica, and it worked great.
I would love for you to post an updated playlist because my iPod is in need of a makeover as well. May I suggest "Evacuate the Dancefloor" by Cascada, and lots of other Glee songs, like
ReplyDelete"Bust Your Windows." I also love Bonnie Tyler's "I Need a Hero" for running. None of those are very heavy, but they are energetic for me.
Eminem gets me through a lot of tough runs.
ReplyDeleteHere are some of my favorite songs to run to...
ReplyDeleteBust A Move - Young MC
Sexy B*tch - David Guetta
Tik Tok - Kesha
I wish I had my iPod with me.. I have tons but that's all I can think of.
Lots of people safety pin their gu's to their shorts. You could do that, and then stick your phone in the little pocket. There's no way I'd carry a phone in my hand for 4+ hours - it would probably be dead from sweat by the time I was done.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite songs to run to? Pokerface - Lady Gage, Rock 'N Roll - Led Zeppelin (I actually run to a LOT of Led Zeppelin), Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani, Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle - Guns 'N Roses, Single Ladies - Beyonce. So I have a mix of "booty tunes" and classic rock types. It's the way I am. :)
ReplyDeleteGood call with the Muse! One I had to download for my stale collection today is Phoenix's 1901...that's a good running song.
ReplyDeleteGood luck at Disney. I did the Goofy race and loved it. Running in the parks was awesome! Music - I like to mix it up as well but need to be careful for slower run day not to get a fast beat.
ReplyDeleteI've downloaded a few random songs specifically for running lately.... (please don't judge me for my lack of masculine songs... :)
ReplyDelete"All the pretty girls" Fun
"Down" Jay Sean
"Free Energy" Free Energy
"Imma Tell" Tech N9NE
Ok, maybe that last one was to get some street cred - but it has a good/fast beat for running! My new fav 5K song.
Chicrunner just posted a huge list o' songs: http://chicrunner.com/new-jams-in-time-for-the-holidays/
ReplyDeleteRachael also posts tunes every Monday: http://thebeginningrunnersblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/music-monday-hippity-hop-finalists.html
(Check past Monday's for other types of music too)
As for where to store the camera; invest in either a spibelt or iFitness. I have the spibelt and it def works and I've heard good things about the iFitness too!
Good luck on the 20 miler!!! I didn't realize you were doing it on Sunday! What time? I could probably meet you out there for about 5 miles of it! Let me know!
you NEED "Do Your Thing" by Basement Jaxx. My power song for running!!!
