- I haven't yet invested in the highly coveted Garmin. I'll probably be shunned by the whole of the running community for even admitting to that. (Note to Husband: My birthday's next month! Or anniversary in August! Or, heck, I'll even wait till Christmas!) But, seriously, running on the treadmill helps me keep my pace, let's me know how far I've gone, etc. etc. All those wonderful things that a Garmin can do for me, the treadmill can do, too.
- I get to watch a nightly dose of reality TV, whether it be American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, The Biggest Loser, etc. I don't even mind reading the subtitles at the bottom of the screen. Just call me a multi-tasker - I can run, listen to my iPod, watch a TV show, and read subtitles all at once!
- When it's windy, rainy, snowy, hailing, 100+ degrees outside, my friend, the Treadmill, is always ready for me to hop on and go for a run. Again, a lot of you might say, "Only a true runner would brave all of Mother Nature's elements just to go for a run outside." Well, whatever. To each his own...
- If nature calls, I don't have to find some obscure spot on the side of the road to do my business. I am conveniently located near a clean restroom while running the treads.
So, this is not to say that I don't like running outside. Because I do. I love it much more than running on a treadmill. I'm just saying that if I have to run on the treadmill, I don't dread it. It doesn't feel like drugdery. Running on the treadmill is better than not running at all. Think of the bright side, people!
Anyway, today I did 7 treadmill miles. The whole reason for this post is beacuse during those 7 miles i thought to myself (add "thinking" to the multi-tasking list! ha), "This isn't so bad. Why do people hate running on the treadmill so much?"
i LOVE to get outside, but I too have enjoyed a few treadmill runs this winter! (I loving refer to it as the "suckmill.")
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the running!!
I do the SAME thing. I don't mind the treadmill most of the time. I get into ruts where I just can't do it, but I have one in the basement and if I need to do a long run, it is great! I have the TV, water, can run upstairs for food if I need to... I've always been able to tolerate the TM!
ReplyDeleteI wish that I didn't mind running on the treadmill. It really is torture for me. But I think this might be different if I had one in my house and could watch a TV screen bigger than 13 inches... and also have a fan blowing on me... and actually get to watch something that I like. But yes, last night I really wished that I had a close bathroom... I really had to run fast to get home! :)
ReplyDelete7 miles on the treadmill is pretty impressive. I usually go about 5 minutes before I'm bored and stop.
ReplyDeleteFour comments!!! Woo-hoo! My blog is moving up in the world!
ReplyDeleteSteve: I like the term "suckmill" better than "dreadmill". nice!
Natalie: Know what you mean about the ruts.
Whitney: It's always better when there's something on that is worth watching.
XC2: Thanks! But, I agree, 7 miles outside in good weather is better than 7 miles on treadmill.
Yeah, I used to run outside exclusively, buuuut after I hurt my knee senior year of college I decided that the treadmill was probably better for my body in general.
ReplyDeleteI'll do some runs outside. But I do the majority of my training on a treadmill. I watch sports when I workout and also love listening to my iPod. I'm another crazy person who actually really likes the treadmill.
